Origin and history

The waters of Belleville form a set of hydraulic installations designed to convey the waters from the sources of Belleville Hill to the areas below Paris. This infrastructure, spread over the 10th, 19th and 20th arrondissements, includes a large aqueduct of 750 meters long, large enough to allow the passage of two people at the front. The route is punctuated with underground looks, some of which still remain today, such as those of the Cascades, Lantern or Roquette.

The first gutters were created in the 12th century by the monks of Saint-Martin-des-Champs Abbey, owners of land between the current streets of Belleville and the Envierges. The water, initially circulating in open-air vents, was then channeled into underground pipes called "pierres". This network also fed the abbeys of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs and la Roquette, as well as aristocratic hotels such as Saint-Pol or the Celestines.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, the city of Paris built the great aqueduct of Belleville to supply the population. The waters were reused in the 17th century to feed Saint Louis Hospital. In the 18th century, the various networks (Saint-Martin, Saint-Antoine, Roquette, Saint-Louis) were connected to the main aqueduct, forming the "waters of the city", managed by the municipal authorities. Ranked historic monuments in 2006, these developments reflect the evolution of water supply techniques in Paris since the Middle Ages.

The network includes control and settling looks, such as those of the Chambrette, Chaudron or Petites-Rigoles. Some, such as the look of the Lantern or that of Saint Martin, are still visible today. In the 19th century, the engineer Belgrand described them as "northern springs", with the waters of the Pré-Saint-Gervais, highlighting their historical importance for Parisian supply.

The waters of Belleville illustrate the collaboration between religious institutions (abbeys), royal power (city of Paris) and growing urban needs. Their preservation offers a unique insight into the technical and social challenges of water management in an expanding metropolis, from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
