Origin and history

The road cross of Mazerolles-du-Razès is an emblematic monument of local religious heritage. Dating from the sixteenth century, it is distinguished by its location in the porch of the village church, in the department of Aude. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1941 bears witness to its cultural and architectural importance for the Occitanie region.

On one side, the cross has an open hand, a symbol frequent in medieval and reborn Christian iconography. On the other hand, a Paschal lamb bearing a cross recalls the themes of Redemption and sacrifice, typical of the religious representations of this period. These decorative elements, though simple, illustrate the spiritual and commemorative function of this type of monument.

The cross-roads, frequent in the French countryside, often served as landmarks for pilgrims or travellers, while marking the sacred space around churches or crossroads. In Mazerolles-du-Razès, this cross is part of a rural landscape where the Church played a central role in the social and spiritual organization of the communities. Its location in the church porch highlights its direct link to local religious practices, while reflecting the craftsmanship and beliefs of the modern era.
