Origin and history

Gueberschwihr Winemaker's Farm is an emblematic building of the Alsatian rural heritage, located at 10 des Forgerons Street. Built in the mid-19th century, it partially replaces an older structure, probably from the 18th century, whose remains remain like a corner chain with bosses. The main building body, rebuilt after a fire in 1843, houses an exceptional decor: a panoramic wallpaper inspired by the hunting landscape of the Zuber factory, but handcrafted, a rare technique for the time. This wallpaper, preserved in situ in a room on the first floor, bears witness to the artistic refinement of the rural bourgeois interiors.

The farm's architecture combines traditional Alsatian elements, such as the wood panel on the back floor of the house, with functional additions related to viticulture. The main cellar, accessible by a door in the middle of the street, and an 18th century well (moved) in the courtyard, recall its historical wine use. An outside stone staircase, located under the entrance passage, and a secondary cellar in the outbuildings complete the whole. Although the barn has now disappeared, the farm retains traces of its evolution, especially after the fire of 1843 which marked its partial reconstruction.

Classified as a historic monument in 1999, the farm specifically protects the bedroom (old living room) and its wallpaper decor, located on the first floor of the house. This classification underlines the heritage importance of its interior, where local crafts and industrial influences are mixed, as the mention of the manufacturer Zuber shows. The building thus embodies both the agricultural history of Alsace and the stylistic transitions of the 19th century, between traditions and modernity.

The location of the farm, in the wine village of Gueberschwihr, strengthens its anchor in a terroir marked by the cultivation of the vine for centuries. Its exact address, 10 rue des Forgerons, and its Insee code (68111) are located in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated to be fair (level 5/10), perhaps reflecting uncertainties about its historical parcel boundaries.
