Facades and roofs (Case A 402): inscription by decree of 10 March 1964

Origin and history

The wooden house at 63 Ernest-Renan Street in Tréguier, Brittany, is a typical example of 15th and 16th century civil architecture. Its half-timbered facades, with slightly protruding fronts, illustrate the construction techniques of the era. The opening of the first floor cut the upper front solery, while the opening of the second floor is equipped with a central stud, striking stylistic features.

This monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 22 October 1996, for its facades and roofs. The protection specifically concerns the half-timbered elements and the roof structure, whose street side crawling overflows strongly. These architectural details reflect the adaptation of medieval urban houses to the practical and aesthetic needs of the Renaissance.

The location of this house, in the historical centre of Tréguier, a city marked by its medieval and religious heritage, underlines its importance in the urban fabric. Although the sources do not specify its original use, this type of construction was often intended for local artisans, merchants or notables. The wooden structure, common in Brittany at this time, reflects available resources and local know-how.

The available data indicate a location accuracy considered "fair" (note 5/10), without additional information on its current accessibility. No mention is made of an opening to the public, a rental or contemporary tourist use. The associated photographs, however, under Creative Commons license, make it possible to appreciate its architectural details.

The Insee de Tréguier code (22362) confirms its membership in the Côtes-d-Armor department in Brittany. This administrative and geographical context places the house in a wider set of Breton heritage, where wood-paned constructions are relatively rare compared to more eastern regions such as Normandy or Alsace.
