16th century wooden house near the gate of the rampart: inscription by order of 16 December 1949
Origin and history
The log house on Rue de la Grande Carrière at Crozet is an emblematic 16th century civil building. This type of construction, typical of late medieval architecture, is distinguished by its apparent wooden structure, a technique common in the towns and small towns of the period. The building is located near the old gate of the rampart of Crozet, highlighting its integration into the historic urban fabric of the village.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of December 16, 1949, this house illustrates the heritage importance given to the remains of the traditional habitat in France after the Second World War. The protection specifically concerns the 16th century wood-paned house, highlighting its architectural and historical value. Today owned by the commune of Crozet, in the Loire department (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), it remains a material testimony of the lifestyles and constructive know-how of the Renaissance.
Crozet, like many villages in the region, was at that time marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Wood-paned houses served both as a dwelling and sometimes as a place of activity for local artisans or traders. Their preservation makes it possible to understand the spatial and social organization of the villages of the modern era, where these buildings played a central role in community life.
