Origin and history

The Yves-Machelon Museum is a project born from the decommissioning of the prison of the castle of Gannat, bought by the municipality in 1967 under the impulse of Mayor Yves Machelon. The latter, a lawyer and local politician (mary from 1944 to 1976), wanted to transform the medieval building into a cultural space. The museum officially opened on 13 June 1998, bearing the name of its initiator in tribute to its commitment to the preservation of the Gannatian heritage.

The museum's collections are structured around historical donations and institutional deposits. As early as 1971, the Gannatian Cultural Society contributed with ethnographic objects, while the legacy of MP Gabriel Delarue (1905) enriched the holdings with furniture, paintings and musical scores. The state and the Allier department complete the collections, as in 1971-1972 with the depot of hippomobile cars of the Château de Veauce, or in 1982 with old cars from the Noyel legacy.

The museum's jewel remains the evangelical of Gannat, a 9th century Carolingian manuscript from the Church of St. Croix, classified among national treasures. The permanent halls explore local history, from prehistory (with a fossilized rhinoceros of 23 million years) to the Second World War, including religious art (status classified as MH, reliquaries) and popular traditions (bourbonese cuisine, laces, violins). A Gallo-Roman stele dedicated to the god Sucellus, discovered in 1888, also illustrates the ancient past of the region.

The castle itself, a former fief of the Sires of Bourbon (18th century), was a prison until 1967. Its conversion into a museum symbolizes the desire to enhance an architectural and memorial heritage, combining medieval history, sacred art and daily life in Bourbonnais. Temporary exhibitions and funds on the Resistance (such as the escape of Claude Hettier de Boislambert) reinforce its territorial anchor.
