Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Baigneaux is a historic monument dating from the 16th century, located in the commune of Baigneaux (Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine). It is distinguished by its ornaments representing the instruments of the Passion, strong symbols of the medieval and reborn Christian tradition. Initially installed in the cemetery, it was moved inside it, probably for reasons of preservation or development.
This cross was classified as a Historic Monument by a decree of 10 June 2002, thus protecting its integrity and heritage value. Today it is the property of the municipality of Baigneaux. Its location, although documented, is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5 out of 10), according to available data. Sources also indicate an approximate address, 1 Bis Rue Yvonne de la Seiglière, from GPS coordinates.
The cemetery crosses of the 16th century, like that of Baigneaux, played a central role in the religious and social life of local communities. They served as a spiritual landmark, marking the sacred space of the cemetery, and reminded the faithful of the sufferings of Christ through the instruments of the Passion. These monuments also reflected the handicrafts and beliefs of the time, often sponsored by parishes or wealthy families to affirm their piety.
