Origin and history
Zuytpeene is a historic monument in the village of Zuytpeene, in the Hauts-de-France region. It is a typical example of the earth fortifications built during this period to provide local defence and territorial control. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 21 June 1978 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation.
Feudal mottes, such as Zuytpeene, were often associated with wooden or stone structures, serving as seigneurial residences or strategic points. In the Middle Ages, these buildings played a central role in the social and military organization of rural areas. They symbolized the power of the local lords and allowed the area to be monitored, while providing protection against invasions or conflicts.
The location of Zuytpeene in the Northern Department made it an area potentially exposed to the regional tensions of the time.
