Origin and history

The Ardennes Metallurgy Museum (M.M.A.) is dedicated to the history of metallurgy in the Meuse Valley in Ardennes. Located in a former industrial building in Bogny-sur-Meuse, it highlights the impact of this activity on the landscape, urban planning and local generations. Metallurgy, still active today, has shaped the economic and social identity of the region, from small nail shops to large factories.

The museum's history began with an exhibition in 1987 in Nouzonville, in a disused factory, organized by historians and an ethnologist. This project, born of a desire to enhance the Ardennes industrial heritage, was transferred to Bogny-sur-Meuse in 1989. The present museum, inaugurated in 2009 after a museum renovation, incorporates testimonies, machines and iconic objects, illustrating the evolution of techniques and working conditions.

The museum journey begins with a video of workers' testimonies, evoking their attachment to the profession despite its difficulties. The stands present the evolution of processes, from artisanal workshops to modern factories, including re-enactments like a nailmaker. The museum also addresses local industrial paternalism, social struggles and the diversity of productions (clous, bolts, weapons), while showing contemporary innovations such as robotics.

A sensory section, Paulin's journey, pays tribute to Paulin Caniard, a metallurgist who founded the museum. The showcases showcase recent productions and current technologies, highlighting the continuity between the artisanal past and the modern industry. The museum is thus a place of memory and transmission of Ardennes know-how.
