Origin and history
The 80 pillars of the Écouves forest are granite markers erected at the end of the 18th century, around 1772, during the reformation of the forest led by engineer Chaillou. They indicate the names of neighbouring intersections and their directions, forming a rational signalling system characteristic of the Lights. This marking reflects a scientific will to control and organize the forest territory, typical of the policies of the Ancien Régime.
These landmarks, registered as historical monuments since 15 April 1987, are spread over twelve communes of Orne, including La Lande-de-Goult, Radon or Saint-Didier-sous-Écouves. Their design is part of a broader movement of mapping and systematic marking of French territory in the 18th century, aimed at facilitating the management of natural resources and movements. They are one of the few preserved examples of these archaic signs, reflecting the evolution of forest management techniques.
The Écouves forest, where these terminals are located, covers a vast area in Normandy, in the department of Orne. Their presence illustrates the historical importance of this forest, subject to administrative reforms under Louis XVI. Engineer Chaillou, mentioned in the sources, would have supervised their installation as part of a modernization of forest management methods, combining practical utility and scientific approach to the territory.
Architecturally, these pillars are distinguished by their functional simplicity: carved in the local granite, they bear engraved inscriptions indicating the directions. Their varying conservation status reflects their exposure to weather for over two centuries. Their inscription in the title of historic monuments underscores their heritage value as material witnesses to forest practices of the past and to the local history of Orne.
