Origin and history

The Hôtel du Bureau des Finances de Bourges was built between 1623 and 1628 by architect Jean Lejuge to house the Bureau des Finances de la généralité de Bourges. This building, designed for administrative use, reflected the importance of financial management under the Ancien Régime in this central region of France. Its original architecture, typical of the seventeenth century, marked the desire for prestige and functionality unique to the royal institutions of the time.

At the end of the 18th century, after the departure of the Finance Office, the hotel became the property of the Robin de Scevole family. This transition led to major architectural changes: the street façade was redesigned, the treasurers' staircase (except the walls) and the entrance pavilion were removed, and the facades of the two wings were rebuilt. The staircase was then moved into the large pavilion, adapting the building to its new residential vocation.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of August 18, 1944 for its main building and its two wings, and then registered for the rest of the hotel on November 9, 1944, this monument today bears witness to the evolution of architectural uses and styles between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its address, 18 rue Jacques-Coeur in Bourges, makes it a key element of the local urban heritage, linked to the financial and social history of the city.
