Origin and history

The Fountain of Orbessan is an iconic 18th century achievement, erected in 1776 in the centre of the village of Orbessan in Gers. This monument, of classic style, is distinguished by its structure in two parts: a semi hexagonal basin on the ground and a vertical edicle decorated with a commemorative inscription. The ensemble, composed of pilasters framing a central plate and surmounted by an entablement, reflects the influence of the architectural cannons of the time.

The fountain owes its existence to the knight of Bourg, who donated it to the village community. This gesture, inscribed on the monument, reflects the practices of local patronage under the Ancien Régime, where the notables financed public works to affirm their social status. In addition to its practical usefulness, the fountain served as a gathering point and symbol of prosperity for the village.

Ranked a historic monument on May 30, 1947, the Orbessan fountain illustrates the heritage recognition of ancient hydraulic structures. Its listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory highlights its architectural value and its role in local history. Today, it remains a central element of Orbessan's heritage, linked to the collective memory and identity of the territory.
