Chapelle Saint-Thibault (former) (cad. AR 157): inscription by order of 27 March 1968

Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Thibault de Decize is a 13th century religious building located in the town of Decize, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is precisely at the intersection of National Highway 79 and Departmental Highway 136, between the canal and the River Aron. This monument, now owned by a private company, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 27 March 1968, which shows its heritage importance.

The location of the chapel is documented with a priori satisfactory accuracy (note 6/10), and its official address is referenced in the Merimée base under the code Insee 58095, corresponding to the commune of Decize in the department of Nièvre. Although its current access (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its status as an old chapel and its registration as a Historic Monument make it a key element of the local heritage.

Burgundy-Franche-Comté, in the 13th century, was a region marked by the development of religious buildings, often linked to commercial roads and riverways. Chapels like Saint-Thibault served as places of worship, rest for travellers or spiritual landmarks in areas of passage. Their construction reflected the influence of the Church and local lords, as well as the medieval social organization around the lines of communication.
