Origin and history
The tumulus and camp of Métairies, located in the commune of Métairies in Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a monument classified as Historic Monuments since 1930. This archaeological site dates back to Neolithic, but its occupation extends over several periods, with traces suggesting use as a castral motte in the early Middle Ages. Interpretations vary: some historians, such as Delamain, see it as a Gallic camp, while Marvaud associates it with a Roman occupation.
The official protection of the site in 1930 made it possible to recognize its heritage importance. Although the sources mention assumptions about its origin (Gaulian, Roman or medieval), there is no definitive evidence to contrast these theories. The tumulus and camp are located on cadastral plots B 540 to 542, and their GPS location is approximate, with an accuracy considered fair (note 5/10).
Today, the site remains a testimony of the successive occupations of the region, from Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Its classification as a historical monument makes it a place of interest for the study of transitions between prehistoric, ancient and medieval periods. The data available are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without further details on its accessibility or current use.
