Oriel on the main façade: inscription by order of 12 October 1929

Origin and history

The house at 1 Dietrich Street in Obernai is a building from the 1st quarter of the 17th century, typical of the Alsatian architecture of this period. It is distinguished by its oriel (logette) supported by four consoles sculpted with floral motifs, as well as by its door windows, characteristic of bourgeois houses of the period. Before modern changes, the facade had a window and a door whose lintel had a date, which was now gone.

Classified as a historic monument since 1929, this house illustrates the civil heritage of the city of Obernai, in the Lower Rhine. The inscription relates specifically to the main façade, protected by decree of 12 October 1929. This type of construction reflects the prosperity of the Alsatian cities in the early seventeenth century, marked by a mixture of Germanic and French influences in architecture.

The precise location of this monument, in the heart of Obernai, makes it a testament to the urban planning of the Greater East region. Dietrich Street, where it is located, is emblematic of the historic centre of the city. The preserved architectural elements, such as shingles and sculptures, offer an overview of the craft techniques of the time, while emphasizing the social status of its former occupants, probably local merchants or notables.
