Origin and history
The right stone, also known as Pierre du Paly or Menhir de Milly, is a block of rectangular silica sandstone, measuring 4 meters high. Located on a plateau overlooking the Essonne valley, this isolated menhir features engravings on both sides: a cross and cupules to the west, a face to the east. A similar second block rests on the ground nearby.
Ranked a historical monument in 1974, this neolithic menhir bears witness to ancient megalithic practices. His engravings, made by picketing, suggest a symbolic or ritual function. The site is referenced in the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirming its heritage importance.
The Essonne department, where Milly-la-Forêt is located, houses several comparable megalithic sites. The Right Stone illustrates the prehistoric human occupation of the region, marked by the erection of stone monuments. Its state of conservation and legal protection make it a remarkable vestige of Neolithic in Île-de-France.
