Origin and history

The church of Saint-Christol de Fonters-du-Razès, located in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region, is a religious building dating back to the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. It has a unique nave and a semi-circular apse, characteristic of a primitive Romanesque style for its eastern part, while its western part, including a door in the middle of the hangar, seems to date back to the thirteenth century. Expansions were made in the 18th century, including the bottom wall and part of the side walls.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the church was placed under the command of St John of Jerusalem. It also housed a priory attached to the monastery of Prouille. Prior to the Revolution, Fonters-du-Razès was not an autonomous parish but an annex to Saint-Amans. In 1873, a new church was built in the village, transferring the title of branch, but the former church of St.Christol remained in operation thanks to the presence of neighbouring hamlets and the designated cemetery.

The building was listed as historic monuments on April 14, 1948, recognizing its heritage value. Today, the church belongs to the municipality of Fonters-du-Razès and retains architectural traces of its various construction periods, reflecting its evolution over the centuries.
