Menhir (cad. AB 27): by order of 22 August 1966
Origin and history
Ger's menhir is a megalithic vestige erected during the Neolithic period, a period marked by the emergence of agriculture and livestock in Europe. This monument, located in the commune of Ger (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), illustrates the funeral or ritual practices of local prehistoric societies. Its location in the landscape probably reflects a territorial and symbolic organization unique to the communities of the time.
Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 22 August 1966, this menhir is now owned by the municipality of Ger. Although available sources (such as Monumentum) do not specify its exact use, its legal protection underscores its heritage importance. Menhirs, in general, were often associated with religious, commemorative or astronomical functions in neolithic societies.
Their presence in the south-west of France, particularly in New Aquitaine, reflects a dense and organized human occupation from this distant period.
