The cross of Isson, at the crossing between the road of Drosnay and rue Gambillon, in the town of Isson, on the public domain not cadastralized, in accordance with the plan annexed to the decree: inscription by order of 15 May 2025 amended by the order of inscription of 5 June 2025

Origin and history

The Cross of Isson is a listed monument located in the commune of Saint-Remy-en-Bouzemont-Saint-Genest-et-Isson, in the department of Marne (Grand Est). It is precisely at the crossing between Drosnay Road and Gambillon Street, on a non-cadastre public domain. Its inscription as a Historic Monument was formalized by two successive decrees, dated May 15, 2025 and June 5, 2025, thus confirming its heritage value and legal protection.

This type of cross, often erected at crossroads or village entrances, played a symbolic and religious role in rural communities. In the historical context of the Great East, these monuments frequently marked places of assembly, prayer or commemoration. Their presence also reflected the social and spiritual organization of the villages, where the Christian faith structured part of the collective life.

The Isson Cross, although little documented in available sources, is part of this local tradition.
