Origin and history
The Goguin Tower, originally known as the Cuffy Tower, is an iconic building in the city of Nevers, located on the Pier des Mariniers. Built in the 12th century, it was profoundly renovated in 1419, marking its anchor in the 15th century. Its history reflects the architectural and functional evolution of the region, moving from a defensive role to a more practical use over the centuries.
In the 17th or 18th century, the tower was converted into a windmill, illustrating the adaptation of medieval structures to the economic needs of the era. It owes its present name, "Goguin", to an owner who gave it in 1906. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 11 July 1945, it now bears witness to the architectural and historical heritage of Nevers, integrated with the old city walls.
The Goguin Tower is a typical example of the transformation of medieval buildings in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Originally conceived as a defensive element, it has evolved to meet local needs, especially agricultural ones with its use as a mill. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments underlines its importance in the urban and architectural history of Nevers.
