Origin and history

Le manoir de la Chetalière is a manor house located in Maillé, in the Indre-et-Loire department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, this monument illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the late and reborn medieval period. The site is surrounded by high walls with three cylindrical towers with stone domes and a square tower, probably added in the 16th century. These elements, combined with an inner round path, underline its defensive and seigneurial character.

The facades and roofs of the mansion were partially protected by a decree of 13 December 1977, classifying it as historical monuments. The cylindrical towers house square rooms equipped with murderers, testifying to their original defensive function. A high house, located north of the courtyard, completes the architectural complex. The square tower, distinct by its shape, marks a stylistic evolution towards the 16th century, a period of transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The manor house is part of a regional context marked by the presence of numerous gentilhommières and castles, reflecting the social organization and local power of the lords in Touraine. These often fortified residences served as both a place of life, a symbol of prestige and protection from conflict. Their architecture thus combines military elements (walls, towers, murders) and aristocratic living spaces, characteristic of the 15th and 16th centuries in the Centre-Val de Loire.
