Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Laurent is a religious building located in the town of Baugé, on the present commune of Baugé-en-Anjou, in the department of Maine-et-Loire. Built mainly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it embodies the religious architecture of this period in Anjou. Its central location in the village reflects its historic role as a community and spiritual gathering place for the inhabitants of the area.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 27 July 1979, this church is now protected for its heritage value. The Mérimée sheet specifies that it belongs to the municipality and indicates its exact address at 14 Rue de l'Église, in the Old Baugé district. Although the available sources do not detail the architectural transformations experienced over the centuries, its ranking reflects its importance in the local heritage.
At the time of its construction, the 16th and 17th centuries were marked in Anjou by a rural economy dominated by agriculture and livestock, as well as by a social organization strongly influenced by the Church. Parish churches like Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Laurent played a central role, not only for religious offices, but also as spaces for sociability and community affairs management. Their architecture often reflected the means and artistic influences of their time.
