Origin and history
Menhirs de la Fage are a group of three megaliths located in the municipality of Bondons, in the department of Lozère, in the Occitan region. These erect stones, characteristic of Neolithic, testify to the ancient human occupation in this mountainous area of southern France. Their layout and size suggest a ritual or symbolic function, typical of prehistoric societies of this time.
The site was officially recognized for its heritage importance in 1941, when menhirs were listed as historic monuments. This protection highlights their archaeological value and their role in understanding the cultural and religious practices of neolithic communities. Their precise location, 500 metres from a first group of menhirs bearing the same name, highlights a remarkable concentration of megalithic remains in this area.
Menhirs of the Fage are part of a wider landscape of prehistoric monuments in Lozère, an area rich in traces of ancient human occupation. Their preservation allows us to study the techniques of size and erection of stones, as well as the choices of implantation linked to geographical or symbolic criteria. Today, they are an accessible heritage, although their exact location may vary in precision depending on the sources available.
