Origin and history

Saint-Haon-le-Châtel is a medieval fortified village located in the Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. With an area of only 87 hectares, it is the smallest municipality in the Loire and the 53rd smallest in France. Its history dates back at least to the 10th century, when Count Artaud I leave the local church at Cluny Abbey in 954. This site, which later became the seat of a vigil in the 12th century, was then under the authority of the Counts of Forez.

In the 12th century, the village already housed a church, ramparts, and a hospital near an important road. The gluing of the cure depended on the priory of Ambierle, himself linked to Cluny. This medieval heritage, including the church of Saint-Eustache, the ramparts, as well as buildings such as the mansion of the Fleur de Lys and the Pelletier Hotel, bears witness to its historic importance. The village, perched above the Roanne plain, today retains its typical character and dense urban organization.

The village is also marked by personalities such as Jean Jules Jusserand, diplomat and ambassador to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, who owned a house and to whom a monument is dedicated. Another notable resident was Louis Cazamian, a specialist in English literature and professor at the Sorbonne, who lived there until his death in 1965. These figures illustrate the link between this small rural village and intellectual or political personalities.

Since 2013, Saint-Haon-le-Châtel has been part of Roannais Agglomeration, a community of municipalities with 88 municipalities around Roanne. Despite its small size, the village attracts for its preserved architectural heritage and picturesque setting, reinforced by events such as its annual medieval festival. Its climate, marked by mountain influences, and dense urban planning make it a unique place in the region.
