Church: ranking by list of 1840
Origin and history
The church of Saint-Nicolas de Maillezais is a historic monument located in the commune of Maillezais, in Vendée (Land of the Loire). Ranked by list in 1840, it now belongs to the municipality. Its exact location, 5144 Rue de l'Église, is documented in the Merimée base, although the accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).
This monument illustrates the importance of religious heritage in small French communes, often at the heart of community life for centuries. Churches like Saint Nicholas served not only as a place of worship, but also as a social and cultural landmark for the inhabitants. Their preservation, as here by an early classification, reflects the desire to protect these witnesses from local history, even when the archives are lacking to trace their detailed history.
