Origin and history

The Bastion Saint-Pry is a historical monument located in Bethune, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century, it embodies a pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, marked by changes in fortification techniques. This bastion, whose protected elements were inscribed by order of 26 February 1993, is part of a broader defensive set, although its exact role in the local military strategy is not detailed in available sources.

At that time, Bethune was a strategic fortified city, located in a region often disputed between the kingdoms of France, the Holy Empire, and neighbouring duchy like Burgundy. The bastions, like that of Saint-Pry, served to strengthen the ramparts against the nascent artillery, reflecting the geopolitical tensions of the late Middle Ages. The local population then lived in a context marked by wars, trade, and a hierarchical social organization, where fortifications played a key role in protecting people and property.

Today, the Saint-Pry bastion is jointly owned by a private company and a public institution. Although information on its access to the public (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its location at 93 Boulevard Vauban in Bethune is attested. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, highlight its heritage importance, with a precise location considered "very satisfactory" (note of 8/10).
