Origin and history
The church Saint-Julien-et-Sainte-Basilisse de Brenac, located on the former municipality of Brenac (now integrated in Quillan, Aude), is a religious building built in the 17th century. It was erected on the foundations of an earlier church, and then thoroughly remodeled in the 19th century, including the addition of a western porch and a rich interior decor. Its architecture is characterized by a unique nave, a single span choir and a semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four.
The interior decor, particularly neat, dates mainly from the 19th century. It includes plaster cartridges decorated with oval cross shells and medallions, false panelling and a fake device painted on the walls of the nave. The ceiling, marrying the frame, is decorated with panels representing the instruments of the Passion, while the apse, divided into five historical panels, is treated in a camaieu of blue. These elements reflect the antiquisant taste of the time, mixing ionic pilasters, cornices with denticles and religious motifs.
Partially classified as historical monuments in 1987 (façades, roofs and painted decor), the church illustrates the evolution of architectural and decorative styles between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in Occitanie. Its porch, side chapels and apse with architectural decoration underline its heritage importance in the Audian religious landscape. The building, owned by the municipality, also bears witness to the local urban transformations, Brenac having merged with Quillan in 2016.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a historical monument and describe in detail its stylistic features. However, no information is provided on any sponsors or artists who participated in its decoration or on its current use (cult, visits, events).
