Origin and history
The remains of the former monastery of Sainte-Marie and its cemetery are located in Trescléoux, in the department of Hautes-Alpes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This site, classified as Historic Monument, is located precisely at the place called Le Monestier, on cadastral plot n°317. Although the exact period of its construction or use is not specified in the available sources, its official registration by order of 25 September 2023 underlines its heritage importance.
Medieval or ancient monasteries often played a central role in the religious, social and economic life of local communities. In Trescleoux, as in other villages in the region, these settlements could serve as places of prayer, burial, but also as centres of knowledge or reception for pilgrims. Their presence generally reflected the influence of the Church in the territorial and daily organization, although the specific details of this monastery remain to be documented.
