Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre de Prouilly, located in the eponymous village in the Grand Est region, is a religious building of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, mixing Romanesque and Gothic styles. Ranked at the Historical Monuments since August 9, 1921, it embodies a preserved medieval architectural and artistic heritage, with elements such as its 12th century baptismal fonts or its carved tympanum.
Among its treasures, the church houses three 14th century statues, including that of Saint Peter surrounded by two bishops, adorning the tympanum of the western portal. These works, classified in 1908, illustrate the religious art of the time. The furniture also includes 16th-century woodwork, 17th and 19th-century canvases, and a cross path of 1858 restored in 2009, reflecting the artistic and devotional evolution of the place.
The XIIth century baptismal fonts, classified in 2002, as well as a commemorative plaque of 1555 and 19th century statues (Saint John the Baptist, Saint Bernard, Virgin with the Child) complete this heritage. These elements, protected by successive rankings, underline the historical and cultural importance of the building for the commune and the Champagne-Ardenne region (now Grand Est).
The church, owned by the commune of Prouilly (code Insee 51448), is located at the approximate address of 9001 Impasse du Presbytère. Its architecture and furniture, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, make it a place of memory and still active worship, open to visit according to the communal modalities.
