Origin and history
The Saint-Martin-de-Vertou church, located in the heart of the village of L'Île-d'Olonne in Vendée, has its origins in the 12th century with the construction of a first building. The latter was replaced in the 13th century by a new church, marking an architectural and religious evolution in the region. Major transformations took place in the 17th century for the choir, then in the 20th century for the nave and the bell tower, which then adopted its present appearance. These successive changes reflect the liturgical and aesthetic needs of the eras traversed.
In 2021, a restoration project was launched for a period of two years to preserve the building's bell tower and masonry. This project is part of an effort to enhance local heritage, while allowing visitors to access this iconic bell tower during the summer. From its summit, the view embraces the marshes of the island of Olonne and the surroundings of the village, offering both historical and natural panorama.
Inside and outside the church, although partially described, emphasize its central role in community life. The bell tower, in particular, is a major tourist point of interest, attracting the curious by its history and strategic position. Recent work demonstrates the commitment of the inhabitants and institutions to the preservation of this place of worship and collective memory.
