Origin and history

L'oppidum d'Incheville is a monument located in the municipality of the same name in Normandy. This type of site, characteristic of protohistory, generally served as a fortified site for local populations, often associated with defensive, economic or symbolic functions. Oppidas were strategic spaces, located on heights to dominate the surroundings and control exchanges.

In the Norman region, as elsewhere in Gaul, the oppida played a central role in the territorial organization of the Celtic peoples. These sites were often the heart of community life, hosting artisanal, commercial and religious activities. Although the specific details of the Incheville Oppidum are not available in current sources, its existence bears witness to the importance of this territory during the ancient periods, before Romanization or medieval transformations.
