Origin and history

The Musée du Touquet Paris-Plage was inaugurated on July 9, 1932, during the 50th anniversary of the seaside resort. First carried by the Academic Society and donors, he was installed at the Town Hall under the leadership of Edward Champion, Deputy Mayor and First Conservative. During World War II, his collections were hidden behind a false wall in the basement to protect them.

After damage suffered during the war, the museum reopened in 1963 and was transferred in 1989 to the Way Side villa, built in 1925 by architect Henri-Léon Bloch. Under the direction of Jean Coupé-Jacquart, he enriched a contemporary collection in 1991, before becoming a communal in 1996. His fonds includes modern works, photographic portraits bequeathed by Édouard Champion, and works by artists in residence.

The Anglo-Normand style Way Side villa now houses a varied artistic heritage, ranging from painters from the settlement of Etaples to contemporary artists. The museum is labeled Musée de France and highlights historical photographs (Rodin, Pagnol, Cocteau) as well as works from annual artistic residences.
