Origin and history

Pompertuzat's dovecote, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its conical shape and its two dome structure: an exterior forming the roof and an interior supporting a mobile gallows. The latter allowed, via a ladder, access to the nest baskets arranged on the floor. The presence of a wrought iron girouette, contemporary of the building, is a rare feature for Pigeonniers du Midi, often associated with a seigneurial brand.

This monument illustrates an architectural typology specific to the Toulouse region, where only six similar copies are recorded. Its design reflects 17th century construction techniques, combining functionality (pigeon breeding, symbol of prestige) and aesthetics (couples, girouette). Mobile gallows and nest baskets demonstrate an optimized internal organisation for the maintenance and collection of eggs or pigeons.

Listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 4 October 1932, the pigeon house is located at 55 Moulinasse, in Pompertuzat (Haute-Garonne). Its state of conservation and location (estimated at 7/10) make it a remarkable vestige of the Occitan rural heritage. The girouette, a decorative and symbolic element, emphasizes its status as a seigneurial building, reserved for the aristocracy or large landowners of the time.
