Géraldine Mallet - Author Written about the Romanesque churches of Roussillon

Origin and history

The former church of Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse of Ansignan is a pre-Roman religious building today in ruins. It is located in the village of Ansignan, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon). Its exact location is located north of the present village, suggesting an old occupation of the site, possibly linked to a territorial or religious organization prior to the present structure of the village.

Preroman churches, like Ansignan, were often central places in medieval rural communities. They served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, playing a major social and spiritual role. In the Roussillon, these buildings bear witness to the religious and architectural history of the region, marked by various influences over the centuries.

Their study provides a better understanding of local dynamics, including religious practices and construction techniques of the time.
