House with wooden panels : classification by order of 10 September 1913
Origin and history
The wooden house of Mervans is a monument located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is distinguished by its wooden panels structure, typical of medieval and Renaissance architecture in this region. Classified as historical monuments by order of 10 September 1913, it bears witness to the heritage importance of ancient civil buildings in French towns.
Wood-paned houses, such as Mervans, were common in towns and villages in Burgundy from the Middle Ages. They were often used as housing for local artisans, traders or notables. Their wooden construction, filled with torchi or bricks, reflected both local techniques and a social organization where trade and crafts played a central role.
These buildings also marked the urban landscape, symbolizing the prosperity and identity of communities.
