Origin and history

The chapel Notre-Dame-de-Pitié de Seix, located on Rue de la Chapelle in the village, dates from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, as evidenced by a 1660 vintage stone decorated with three fleurs de lys above the gate. This unique nave building, covered with occitan tiles, contrasts with the richness of its interior decor, including a baroque altarpiece composed of three paintings painted by Riccardo Pedoya (1835–95). The chapel, dedicated to Marian worship, once housed two pietas (XVI and XVII centuries) today transferred to the nearby church of Saint Stephen. Its furniture, partially protected, includes 18th century denominations in cherry and walnut, restored thanks to a financing of 3,500 € in 2011.

The chapel is deeply linked to local pastoral traditions: every 8 September, the shepherds offered a lamb born in summer, whose sale contributed to its maintenance. This ritual reflects the importance of the monument in the community and religious life of the village. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments since 24 March 2014, is now managed by the municipality and supported by the association Les Amis de la Chapele de Seix, which works for its preservation.

Architecturally, the chapel is distinguished by its simple rectangular plan, bell tower and two oculi facade. Inside, a double stand and a 19th century painted decoration illustrate the seven litanyes and pains of the Virgin, with symbols adorning the vault key of the choir. Its adjoining garden, maintained according to the tradition of the parish gardens, strengthens its anchoring in the local landscape, near the Salat (left bank), at 516 m from altitude.
