Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Michel is located at Saint-Michel, in the commune of Saint-Avé, Morbihan department in Brittany. Built in 1524 by the rector Pierre de Chohan, it illustrates the Breton religious architecture of the Renaissance. Its basket handle doors, decorated with accolades, cabbages, buttocks and symbolic sculptures (such as a mermaid or a man folding his legs), testify to a refined craft. The western door, with its columnettes and statuettes, and the animals carved to the south accompanied by a coat of arms, underline its artistic and historical character.
The chapel was listed as historic monuments on 13 February 1929, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Saint-Avé, it is distinguished by protected elements such as its carved decorations and its original structure. The references available, notably on Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the landscape of Christian monuments in the Vannes region. Its exact address, 35 Rue de Saint-Michel, allows to locate it precisely in the village.
The doors of the chapel, especially that of the south and west, are remarkable examples of Breton religious art of the sixteenth century. The carved motifs, combining religious symbols (shells, buttocks) and mythological figures (sirene), reflect the cultural influences of the time. The accuracy of its location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), and the Creative Commons (Fab5669) licensed photographic credits complete the data available on this iconic monument.
