Origin and history

The monument to Guynemer, located in Ouges in Air Force Base 102, pays tribute to Georges Guynemer, an emblematic ace of French aviation during the First World War. Killed in combat on September 11, 1917, he embodied the heroism of the pilots of that time. This monument, one of the few dedicated to a military aviator, also demonstrates the strategic importance of the Longvic base during the conflict.

Initiated in 1928 and inaugurated on 25 July 1932, the monument is the work of the architect Gaston Paris. It consists of a monumental column decorated with bronze relief signed Ovide Yencesse. Originally, a lantern surmounted the structure, modified in 1966. The rear hatch allowed to light this lantern, adding a symbolic dimension to the building.

Filed by order of 28 June 2017, the monument is fully protected. It illustrates both the national tribute paid to Guynemer and the heritage linked to French military aviation. Its location on Air Base 102 reinforces its anchoring in the aviation history of the region.

The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), although GPS coordinates point to an approximate address at Marsannay-la-Côte. This lag reflects the challenges of mapping military sites, often subject to access restrictions.
