Origin and history
The fountain of the Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Jean, located at Puy-en-Velay, dates from the 18th century. It is distinguished by its hemispherical tank, whose central pivot supports a piping adorned with garland-shaped rinsels, characteristic of the decorative style of the late century. This type of ornamentation evokes a late artistic influence, perhaps inspired by emerging rococo or neoclassical currents.
The top hat of the fountain, which crowns the whole, may have been redone or added after its initial construction. This hypothesis suggests subsequent changes, frequent in public monuments for practical or aesthetic reasons. The fountain, though modest in size, illustrates the importance of water points in the urbanisation of medieval and modern cities, where they served both public utility and beautification.
Listed among the Historical Monuments by decree of 22 June 1972, this fountain belongs to the public domain of the commune of Puy-en-Velay. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The approximate location, at the right of 34 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Jean, is documented in the Mérimée base, although its accuracy is considered a priori satisfactory (level 6/10).
