Origin and history
The fountain of Place Colbert is an emblematic building located in the heart of Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, it occupied a central place in the daily life of the Rochefortais by providing drinking water to the inhabitants of the area. Its location on Colbert Square, now town hall square, made it a gathering point and a key element of local urban planning.
According to available sources, the water was transported to the fountain via pipes from Tonnay-Charente, although this information needs to be confirmed. The monument was listed as historic monuments on February 23, 1925, recognizing its heritage value. The architecture of the fountain is attributed to a masterpiece named Bourguignon, although little is known about his specific intervention.
The fountain, owned by the commune of Rochefort, illustrates the importance of hydraulic infrastructure in the port cities of the eighteenth century. At that time, Rochefort, as a maritime town and royal arsenal, depended on such equipment to meet the growing needs of its population, particularly in central areas. Public fountains then played a social and practical role, facilitating access to water and structuring urban space.
Today, the Colbert Square fountain remains a testimony to the engineering and urban planning of the Ancien Régime. Its classification among historical monuments makes it a protected part of the local heritage, alongside other buildings in Charente-Maritime. Sources also mention its reference in the Mérimée database, a reference tool for the inventory of French architectural heritage.
