Origin and history
The Hotel de Costilhes, located in Saint-Dier-d'Auvergne in Puy-de-Dôme, is an 18th-century building built by the Costilhes family, a line of local notaries. The architecture combines a central house body and two side wings in return for square, typical of the mansions of the era. The courtyard of honour, preceded by a gate framed with half-moon walls, reflects a regional adaptation of classic models.
The interior is distinguished by a monumental staircase with wrought iron ramp, with arched vaults decorated with carved caps. The rooms retain their original décor, such as the kitchen, dining room, and living rooms on the first and ground floor. These elements, as well as the facades and the gate, have been protected since 1991, highlighting the heritage value of the building.
Property of the municipality, the hotel illustrates the social status of bourgeois families in the 18th century, combining residential function and architectural prestige. Its plan between courtyard and garden, inspired by the great Parisian hotels, reflects a desire to assert locality while integrating regional specificities, such as half-moon walls or preserved interior decors.
