Pont dit Pont Romain: inscription by decree of 14 May 1925

Origin and history

The Roman bridge of Mouzillon is a monument located in the commune of Mouzillon, in the Loire-Atlantique region. This bridge spans the Sanguèze, a tributary of the Nantes Sèvre, south of the village. Although its name evokes Roman origin, the available sources do not specify its exact period of construction.

It is a masonry work, typical of sustainable constructions designed to facilitate travel and trade in rural areas. The bridge was listed as a historic monument by order of May 14, 1925, reflecting its heritage and architectural significance. It is now owned by the commune of Mouzillon.

This type of monument, often linked to ancient routes of communication, played a key role in the organisation of the territories, allowing the crossing of waterways and thus promoting economic and social exchanges between villages and surrounding cities. Masonry bridges, like Mouzillon's, were also symbols of technical know-how and durability, reflecting the ingenuity of the builders of their time.
