Origin and history

The Monument to the Work of Cooperative Reconstruction Societies was erected in 1935 in Soissons to honour two causes: the action of cooperatives in the reconstruction of areas devastated by the First World War, and the memory of Guy de Lubersac. The latter, a central figure, presided over the general confederation of cooperatives and the local unions of Aisne and Soissons. The monument, unique in its size (20 m long, 12 m high), was designed as a triumphal arch in concrete by the renowned sculptors Jan and Joël Martel.

The monument is distinguished by its architectural structure: eight columns support two sculpted bas-reliefs. One illustrates reconstruction and agricultural work, the other evokes war, destruction and exodus of people. In the centre, a portico houses a tower topped by a winged allegory symbolizing peace, while in the lower part, a statue depicts Guy of Lubersac in aviation uniform. Entrapment listings recall the role of cooperative societies in the rebirth of the affected territories.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 7 September 2001, this monument is located Place Saint-Christophe in Soissons. It bears witness to both an artistic heritage (major work by the Martel brothers) and a landmark historical page: the collective reconstruction after 1918, carried by local actors such as Guy de Lubersac. Its location in the heart of the city makes it a lasting symbol of resilience and memory.
