Origin and history

The Commanderie de Villemoisan is a medieval religious building, originally founded as a Templar Commandery in the 12th century. Located in the present department of Maine-et-Loire, in the municipality of Villemoisan (now integrated in Val d'Erdre-Auxence), it illustrates the establishment of military-religious orders in western France. Its architecture and history reflect the transitions between Templars and Hospitallers, the latter taking over after the dissolution of the Order of the Temple in the early 14th century.

Following his devolution to the Hospitallers of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, the Commandory was renamed "Commanderie de Béconnais", a name under which it appeared in the diocesan archives of Angers in 1373. This name change marks a new phase in its history, linked to the management of hospital assets in the region. The building, and in particular its chapel, is classified as historical monuments by order of 5 February 1958, thereby recognizing its heritage value.

The Commanderie is part of a wider network of Templar and Hospitaller Commanderies in the Pays de la Loire, demonstrating the territorial and economic organization of these orders. Its ranking among historical monuments makes it a protected site, although practical information about its visit or current state remains limited in available sources. The precise location, confirmed by the Mérimée base, places the site at the address "5146 La Commanderie" in Villemoisan, in the new municipality of Val d'Erdre-Auxence.
