Origin and history

The American Cathedral of Paris, also known as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, is an Anglican religious building built in the late 19th century. Located at 23 George V Avenue in the 8th arrondissement, it is the first American episcopal church built outside the territory of the United States. Its Gothic architecture, designed by the English architect George Edmund Street, makes it an emblematic monument to the Champs Elysées district.

The building of the church began in 1881 and the first religious service was celebrated on 12 September 1886, followed by its consecration on 25 November of that year. The 42 stained glass windows, made by master glassmaker James Bell between 1883 and 1893, illustrate the theme of the Te Deum. After the death of George Edmund Street, his son Arthur Edmund Street drew the arrow, added between 1904 and 1906.

In 1911, a presbytery was built by architect Pett, and in 1923, a memorial was erected to honour American soldiers who died during the First World War. That same year, on 18 March, the church was consecrated as a cathedral and became the seat of the Convocation of the Episcopal Churches in Europe. The building, including its bell tower and a covered gallery, was listed for historical monuments on 27 August 1997.
