Chapel of the hamlet of the Plans (cad. A 741): inscription by decree of 30 September 1975
Origin and history
The Chapel des Plans is a religious building located in the hamlet of Les Plans, on the commune of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, administratively attached to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in Haute-Savoie. Built in the first half of the 18th century, it illustrates the architectural and spiritual heritage of the Alpine valleys of that time. Its registration as a Historical Monument by decree of 30 September 1975 bears witness to its heritage value recognized by the French cultural authorities.
The hamlet of the Plans, like many mountain villages in Haute-Savoie in the 18th century, was organized around local places of worship, often modest but essential to community life. These chapels served not only as a framework for religious offices, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, strengthening social ties in geographically isolated areas. Their architecture, adapted to climate constraints and local resources, reflects the traditional know-how of artisans and Alpine people.
The Chapel des Plans is now owned by the commune of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. Although available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not specify its current use, its conservation status and precise location (139 Route des Plans) are documented. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), and photographs licensed under Creative Commons attest to its existence and integration into the local landscape.
