Origin and history
The St. Peter's Church of Mennecy is a Catholic parish church dedicated to the Apostle Peter, located in downtown Mennecy, Essonne, in the Essonne Valley. It opens on the Rue du General Pierre and is bordered to the south by Rue de la Croix Boissée. Its northwest orientation - south-east and its entrance on the least accessible side of the hill are notable architectural features.
The present church, built in the 13th century, replaces an earlier Romanesque building in the same location. In 1607, a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame was added, with a clean altar. The building has been listed as historic monuments since 6 March 1926, recognizing its heritage value.
The church is distinguished by its two-nave structure and its square bell tower surmounted by an arrow, the highest in the region. Inside, the altarpiece, acquired in 1698 at the church of Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières, as well as a painting of 1759 and an 18th-century work bench, have been classified as historical monuments since 12 July 1912.
The church's furniture and architecture reflect additions and modifications made between the 17th and 18th centuries, while preserving medieval elements. The precise location of the building is attested by its address: 12 Place de l'Église, 91540 Mennency, in the department of Essonne.
