Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Marcel is a church located in La Chambre, Savoie. This religious monument, originally dedicated to the Assumption, was erected as a collegiate monument in 1514. Its Romanesque-style portal dates back to the 12th century, showing preserved medieval architecture. The building is a notable example of Savoyard religious heritage, marked by its history linked to the family of Seyssel-La Chambre, which played a role in its elevation to the rank of collegiate.

The collegiate gate, classified as historical monuments by decree of 23 August 1939, constitutes the main protected element of this monument. The college reflects the importance of religious institutions in the Middle Ages and Renaissance region, when the collegiate churches served as spiritual and cultural centres for local communities. These buildings were often supported by noble families, as evidenced by the involvement of the Seyssel-La Chambre.

Today, the Collège Saint-Marcel remains a symbol of Savoy's architectural and historical heritage. Its classification as a historic monument highlights its heritage value, while allowing its preservation for future generations. The building continues to attract the attention of historians and visitors, interested in its novel portal and its history related to the Maurienne region.
