Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Montpon-Ménesterol retains traces of its Romanesque origin, including a portal and a modillon cornice dating from the 11th or 12th century. These elements, which are integrated into the present façade, are evidence of a first early construction of which few remains remain. The portal, adorned with geometric archivolts and historical capitals, illustrates the local Romanesque art with a triple archature falling on carved columns.
The current building, rebuilt in the 16th century, adopts a single nave plan ending with a five-sided polygonal apse, characteristic of late Gothic architecture. The first span, divided by a massive cylindrical column, houses on one side the raised bell tower and on the other side the old Romanesque portal. The vaults, in agglomerated bellows, are decorated with complex veins, while traces of the old roof on a steep slope remain visible on the bell tower.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1926, the church now belongs to the municipality of Montpon-Ménesterol. Its history reflects the architectural evolutions between Roman and Gothic, with structural adaptations such as the replacement of the original frame by a cover in hollow tiles. The accuracy of its location is estimated as satisfactory a priori, based on available data.
