Origin and history
The Covered Market Pastry is a historical monument located in Chauny, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built between the late 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century, it embodies the transition between traditional 19th century styles and Art Deco. Its location in 14 Place du Marché-Couture makes it a central element of the local architectural heritage, marked by post-war reconstruction.
After Chauny's massive destruction during World War I, architect Louis Rey led the reconstruction of the city centre from 1920 onwards, including the covered market, the railway station and the churches. La Pâtisserie, a private property, is distinguished by its interior decor designed by sculptor Albert Raybaud. The latter uses an innovative technique for the period: painted canvases painted marouflaged and fixed under glass to adorn the ceiling, a method in vogue between the late 19th and early 20th century.
The facades and interior of the pastry are characterized by white faiences with floral motifs, covering the front, walls and part of the ceiling. Mirrors, arranged on the three walls, reinforce the luminous and spacious effect of space. This mixture of materials and techniques reflects a pivotal period in which traditional handicrafts coexist with modernist influences of Art Deco. The building has been listed as a historic monument since 25 July 2006, recognizing its heritage and artistic value.
The Covered Market Pastry also illustrates the role of local artisans in revitalizing devastated cities. Albert Raybaud, in particular, left a lasting imprint with his decorations, while Louis Rey, through his plans, redefined Chauny's urban identity. Their collaboration demonstrates a willingness to reconcile functionality and aesthetics in a context of post-conflict renewal.
